Clary Sage, with its sweet, nutty herbaceous aroma, is a very popular and versatile oil, having many uses in the field of aromatherapy today. It is extracted by steam distillation from the flower tops of the leaves of the plant which produces beautiful blue-white flowers during August. TISSERAND Clary Sage is obtained from the plant grown in France.
Clary Sage has a lengthy history of use as a medicinal plant and oil. It was used by the Romans a general tonic to help strengthen the whole system. The name comes from the Latin salvere, which means ‘to save’ and the word clarus, meaning ‘clear’, because it was said to be useful as an eye soother, using an infusion of the seeds of the plant. The Greeks also revered the oil, making a preparation from the leaves to stimulate the memory. In the middle ages, Clary Sage reached its height in popularity, where the herb was used to relieve anxiety.
Even today, Clary Sage is still widely acknowledged as an important oil. Having a unique euphoric quality, it uplifts the emotions, giving a feeling of tranquillity. Ideal in massage preparations, particularly for sports massage, the oil relieves tired muscles without being too stimulating. It also has a very strong feminine quality, making it a useful balancing and regulating oil at any stage of a woman’s life.

Cedarwood is an oil of the ancients, believed to be one of the first aromatics to be extracted for its therapeutic properties by the Egyptians. The trees, which at one time grew in vast forests in the Lebanon, were highly prized as building materials. In fact, Solomon’s temple was built from these strong, majestic trees. Cedarwood was incorporated into the Egyptian way of life for a great many purposes – used for jewellery, incense, medicines, perfumery and cosmetic preparations. The wood itself is very aromatic, due to the high essential oil content and, at one time, it was the only wood considered worthy enough for the Pharaohs’ elaborate sarcophaguses, taking them on their journey into the next world.
Today, cedarwood is still a very popular essential oil. No longer from the Lebanon, it now comes from Morocco – and this is where we at TISSERAND source this wonderful oil. Just as it was thousands of years ago, the oil is steam distilled from the heartwood of mature trees. With its woody and balsamic fragrance, with honey overtones, cedarwood is used extensively in male cosmetics and colognes, where it acts as a fixative to stop more volatile notes evaporating too quickly. The oil has also long been used in haircare preparations, promoting a healthy scalp and hair growth. So that you too can enjoy the properties of this wonderful oil, here are some recipes for you to try at home:

This well known herb is common all over Europe and can be seen growing in many country gardens and lawns, as well as in the wild. It has an attractive appearance and has finely divided leaves and beautiful daisy like flowers that grow through the summer months. The herb is steam distilled from the freshly dried flowers and the oil produced can be very pale blue to clear, with a wonderfully intense floral, fruity and sweet fragrance.
Popular for its soothing, calming and versatile properties, chamomile has a long standing reputation as a medicine throughout Europe and further a field. It can be traced back thousands of years, even going back as far as Egyptian times. It was one of the nine sacred herbs that the Saxons named ‘maythen’, used in rituals as a form of worship. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, revered it so highly that he was quoted as saying the oil was “Dedicated to the sun because it cures agues (ills)”. In more recent times, chamomile was used in the monasteries of Europe as a medicinal herb. Here are some recipes for you to try at home:
